Psilocybe Semilanceata (Liberty Cap) “Netherlands” Research Plate
$30.00
Psilocybe semilanceata is a distinctive mushroom known for growing either alone or in clusters on rich, acidic soils. It thrives in grasslands such as meadows, pastures, and lawns, where it is commonly found in areas fertilized by sheep or cow manure. However, it does not typically grow directly on the manure itself.
Like all species in the Psilocybe genus, P. semilanceata is a saprobic fungus, meaning it absorbs nutrients by decomposing organic material. The mushroom is often associated with moist areas of fields, where it is believed to thrive on decaying roots, particularly in regions with abundant sedges.
This species, along with others in grasslands such as Ps. mexicana, Ps. tampanensis, and Conocybe cyanopus, may produce sclerotia—a dormant structure that helps the fungus survive harsh conditions like wildfires or other natural disturbances.
Recognized as one of the most widespread psilocybin mushrooms globally, Psilocybe semilanceata can be found in 18 countries. In Europe, it is widely distributed across regions including Austria, Belgium, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, the Netherlands, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, among others. It is widely believed to be native to Europe.
In North America, P. semilanceata is abundant in the Pacific Northwest, particularly west of the Cascade Mountains in the United States, where it fruits abundantly in the autumn and early winter. It has also been recorded in several Canadian provinces, including British Columbia, Ontario, and Quebec. While it’s rare in South America, it has been observed in Chile. Additionally, this species is known to grow in Australia, though it may be an introduced variety there.
