Psilocybe Subaeruginascens grows in clusters, typically in wood chips, piles of leaves, and woody debris found in urban areas, along trails, roads, deciduous forests, and gardens. It can occasionally be found in dung. This species is found between April and July in southern Japan and subtropical Java, as well as in Kwazulu-Natal, South Africa, where it appears in February and March. A closely related species, Psilocybe ovoideocystidiata, has been reported in the Bay Area of California.
