This species is known from the Auckland Region of New Zealand, where it grows in clay soils within both exotic pine plantations and native forests. It bears resemblance to Psilocybe zapotecorum found in Mexico and South America. Psilocybe aucklandie was officially described in 1991 as a new species within the Psilocybe genus, specifically belonging to the Zapotecorum section. The fungus is named for its limited geographic distribution, primarily confined to the Auckland Region, which encompasses New Zealand’s largest city, Auckland, located in the northern half of the North Island.
